Tue Sep 10 14:09:00 UTC 2024: ## Huawei Unveils Trifold Mate XT Smartphone, Challenging Apple in Chinese Market

**Shenzhen, China** – In a direct challenge to Apple’s newly released iPhone 16, Huawei has unveiled its own flagship device: the Mate XT. This trifold smartphone, featuring a 10.2-inch screen, boasts a unique design and advanced AI capabilities.

“We have delivered a product that everyone has imagined but couldn’t make,” declared Richard Yu, Huawei executive director, at the launch event. The Mate XT, priced at 19,999 yuan ($2,800), has already garnered over 4.5 million pre-orders, showcasing strong consumer interest.

The Mate XT, powered by Huawei’s own Kylin chip, features an AI-powered assistant that excels in tasks like text summarization, translation, and editing. This marks a significant push into the burgeoning field of AI-driven smartphone functionality.

Meanwhile, Apple showcased its latest iPhone 16 series, alongside upgraded Apple Watches and AirPods, at a separate event. While Apple also highlighted its new AI features, dubbed Apple Intelligence, these features will be rolled out in phases, starting with a beta update for iPhone 15 Pro models and newer in October.

Huawei’s recent success in the Chinese market has been remarkable. Since releasing the Mate 60 Pro series last August, the company has surpassed Apple in sales. In April, Huawei reported a rise in profit for the fourth consecutive quarter, defying the impact of US sanctions.

In contrast, Apple’s iPhone sales in China experienced a sharp decline of 19% in the same period, marking its worst performance since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple’s market share in the region has also shrunk from 19.7% to 15.7% in the first quarter of 2024.

The intensifying competition in the Chinese smartphone market is prompting Apple to adjust its strategy. The company has been forced to cut prices on some iPhone models to remain competitive against Huawei and other domestic players.

The release of the Mate XT highlights the escalating rivalry between Huawei and Apple in the crucial Chinese market. As both companies race to dominate the smartphone landscape, the battle for innovation and AI supremacy is only likely to intensify.
