Tue Sep 10 15:52:00 UTC 2024: ## Pensioners urged to check eligibility for Winter Fuel Payment as criteria change

**London, UK:** Older Britons are being urged to check their eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment as the government has announced changes to the criteria. Previously a universal benefit for those of state pension age, the payment will now be restricted to those claiming means-tested benefits like Pension Credit.

The change was approved by Parliament on September 10th. This means that individuals receiving Attendance Allowance, a benefit for those with disabilities or health conditions requiring assistance, will no longer automatically receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

Pensions minister Emma Reynolds clarified that pensioners on low incomes receiving Attendance Allowance can still qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment if they meet the criteria for Pension Credit.

“Pensioners on low incomes and in receipt of Attendance Allowance can qualify for an additional amount in Pension Credit, providing they meet the other eligibility criteria,” Reynolds stated.

Claiming Pension Credit can provide access to other forms of government support and top up a person’s income by up to £4,000 a year. However, it is estimated that over 800,000 pensioners are missing out on this vital benefit, highlighting the difficulty in reaching those most in need.

Martin Lewis, a renowned financial expert, expressed concern about the impact of this change on low-income pensioners who are likely to face difficult choices between heating and eating. He urged the government to make reaching these individuals a priority.

The Winter Fuel Payment remains at £200 for eligible households, or £300 for those with someone aged over 80. The government has emphasized that its decision was made with consideration for equality analysis and public sector equality duty requirements.
