**New Delhi, September 9:** Dheeraj Wadhwan, former director of Dewan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL), has been granted bail by the Delhi High Court on health grounds. Wadhwan, accused of involvement in a multi-crore bank fraud case, had been denied bail twice by the trial court.
Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain of the Delhi High Court granted bail, stating that Wadhwan falls under the category of a “sick person.” This decision comes after the trial court’s dismissal of his earlier bail plea.
The Delhi High Court had previously requested a status report on Wadhwan’s bail plea, which was revived on health grounds. The vacation bench of Justice Vikas Mahajan has instructed the CBI to file a status report on the matter.
Wadhwan’s previous bail application was withdrawn on May 17, following his arrest in the DHFL loan case. He had previously been granted protection by the Bombay High Court until May 11 on medical grounds, as he had undergone surgery and was receiving treatment at home following his discharge.
The Supreme Court had previously set aside a Delhi High Court order granting statutory bail to DHFL promoters Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan in January 2023. The court stated that the brothers could not claim statutory bail as a right, as the chargesheet had been filed and cognisance taken. The trial court is now to hear their regular bail applications.
The CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case on October 12, 2022, based on a complaint by the Union Bank of India. Wadhwan and his brother were subsequently arrested on July 19, 2023.
