Tue Sep 10 17:06:52 UTC 2024: ## Former Warren Police Officer Sentenced to Prison for Assaulting Detainee
**DETROIT** – A former Warren police officer, Matthew Rodriguez, was sentenced to one year in federal prison for a civil rights violation. Rodriguez was convicted of using excessive force against a 19-year-old Black man while processing him at the Warren jail in June 2023.
Video footage released by the Warren police department showed Rodriguez punching the man in the face and slamming his head to the ground. Rodriguez admitted to using unreasonable force, claiming he was provoked by a verbal insult. He was subsequently fired from the department.
U.S. District Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey, who presided over the sentencing, expressed his concern over the incident, stating, “I wonder what would have happened if the cameras weren’t working in that booking room.” He emphasized the need for respect for humanity, regardless of one’s position of authority.
Rodriguez’s attorney, Steve Fishman, argued against a prison sentence, suggesting it would not deter other officers from misconduct. However, the judge ultimately sentenced Rodriguez to one year and a day, a sentence that typically results in less than a year of actual confinement due to good behavior credits.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of police brutality and the importance of accountability within law enforcement. U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison stated that “physical abuse of detainees is completely unacceptable and undermines public confidence in the integrity of law enforcement.”
