Tue Sep 10 14:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Typhoon Yagi Devastates Northern Vietnam, Leaving Over 100 Dead and Dozens Missing

**HANOI, VIETNAM** – Typhoon Yagi has wreaked havoc in northern Vietnam, leaving at least 127 people dead and 54 missing, the disaster management agency reported on Tuesday. The majority of casualties were caused by landslides and flash floods triggered by the heavy rains accompanying the storm.

The typhoon made landfall on Saturday in northeastern Vietnam, causing significant damage to industrial and residential areas. It previously impacted the Philippines and the Chinese island of Hainan.

Authorities are warning of severe floods in northern Vietnam, including the capital Hanoi. Industrial hubs like Bac Giang and Thai Nguyen, home to factories of multinational companies, are also facing severe flooding, though the impact on businesses remains unclear.

Several rivers have reached alarming levels, submerging villages and residential areas. The collapse of a 30-year-old bridge over the Red River in Phu Tho province left eight people missing, leading authorities to restrict traffic on other bridges, including Chuong Duong Bridge in Hanoi.

The government has issued warnings to residents of Hanoi’s Long Bien district, urging them to prepare for potential flooding and evacuation. Floodwaters have already reached villages on the outskirts of Hanoi, prompting authorities to begin evacuating residents. Similar measures are being taken in Bac Giang province, where the typhoon and floods have caused estimated damages of 300 billion dong ($12.1 million).
