Typhoon Yagi, once the most powerful storm in Asia this year, has been downgraded to a tropical depression after causing widespread devastation across northern Vietnam, China’s Hainan Island, and the Philippines. The storm has claimed at least 37 lives, with the death toll expected to rise.

Vietnam bore the brunt of Yagi’s fury, with at least 14 fatalities reported, including four from a landslide in Hoa Binh province. Hanoi, the capital city, suffered extensive flooding, power outages, and widespread tree damage, leaving residents reeling from the storm’s impact.

The storm also caused significant damage in Hainan, China, with four deaths reported and widespread power outages. In the Philippines, the first country Yagi hit, the death toll climbed to 20, with 22 people still missing.

While Yagi has weakened, Vietnamese authorities warn of ongoing risks of flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous areas. Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, closed due to the storm, has reopened.

The typhoon’s passage has left a trail of destruction across the region, with extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. Emergency services are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide relief to affected communities.
