Sun Sep 08 12:16:14 UTC 2024: ## Super Typhoon Yagi Leaves Trail of Destruction in Vietnam, Killing Nine

**HANOI, VIETNAM** – Super Typhoon Yagi has left a trail of devastation in Vietnam, claiming the lives of nine people and causing widespread damage to infrastructure and property. The typhoon, which struck northern Vietnam on Saturday, brought with it winds exceeding 149 kilometers per hour, triggering landslides, sinking boats, and ripping roofs off buildings.

A family of four was killed in a landslide in Hoa Binh province early Sunday morning after hours of heavy rain. Another four people perished on Saturday due to flying debris from damaged roofs. A man in Hai Duong province was also killed on Friday when a tree fell on him during the storm.

The port city of Hai Phong was submerged under half a meter of floodwaters on Sunday, with power outages due to damaged lines and poles. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay also suffered significant damage, with at least 23 boats destroyed or sunk at the Hai Au boat lock.

“The wind was pushing from our back, with so much pressure that no boat could stand,” said Pham Van Thanh, a crew member of a tourist boat. “Then the first one sank. Then one after another. I have been a sailor for more than 20 years and have never experienced such a strong and violent typhoon.”

Yagi’s destructive path began in southern China and the Philippines, where it killed at least 24 people and injured dozens more before reaching Vietnam. Scientists have linked the increasing intensity and frequency of typhoons in the region to climate change.

Rescue and recovery efforts are underway in Vietnam, with authorities working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
