**Kyiv, Ukraine** – Russia launched a large-scale overnight drone attack on Ukraine, targeting 11 regions with 67 long-range Shahed drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukrainian air defenses successfully shot down 58 of the drones, but debris from one of the downed drones was found near Ukraine’s parliament building in Kyiv.
This incident marks an unusual occurrence, as Russian missiles or drones rarely reach the city center, which is heavily protected by a combination of Soviet-era and Western-supplied air defense systems.
Photographs released by the parliament show pieces of debris scattered across the ground, including at the base of the steps leading to the main entrance. The drone debris demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defenses despite the challenging nature of the Shahed drones.
These Iranian-designed drones, introduced by Russia in September 2022, are known for their low altitude and minimal heat signature, making them difficult to detect. They are also a cost-effective alternative to missiles, which are more expensive and difficult to produce.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that the drones were launched from two border regions in Russia and the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti Forum in Italy. The two leaders discussed Zelensky’s peace plan for ending the war with Russia and his vision for rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system.
