Thu Jan 01 03:10:00 UTC 2026: ## Stranger Things Season 5 Nears End: Will Byers Comes Out, But Scene Falls Flat for Some

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5, through Episode 7.

Hawkins, Indiana – In a pivotal scene from the penultimate episode of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” Season 5, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) finally reveals to his family and friends that he is gay. The moment, intended to be a cathartic release for the character who has been grappling with his identity throughout the series, sees Will confess his secret, hoping to remove any potential leverage Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) might have against him. Encouraged by Robin (Maya Hawke), Will’s declaration aims to solidify the group’s bond as they prepare for their final battle against the Upside Down’s ultimate villain.

However, while the scene is meant to be a major turning point for Will, some viewers are finding it less impactful than intended. Set in the early 1980s, a time of significantly less acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals, Will’s coming out carries considerable weight. Despite the emotional monologue and the significance of the era, the scene feels somewhat awkward.

Contributing to this feeling are the inclusion of characters like Vickie (Amybeth McNulty) and Murray (Brett Gelman), who have had little prior interaction with Will. Others point to an earlier scene in the season where Will comes to terms with his sexuality, a moment that momentarily grants him unique powers that are quickly revoked, as a more powerful and authentic portrayal of his internal struggle. The show has struggled to develop Will’s character since he was the show’s kidnap victim in season 1.

Despite any reservations, Schnapp expressed satisfaction with Will’s journey in a recent interview. He argued that his character’s sexuality is not his defining trait and that Will is a real person.

With a two-hour finale looming, fans are left hoping that Will Byers will be given the opportunity to truly shine and realize his full potential.
