Thu Jan 01 13:59:06 UTC 2026: ## Eluru Man Publicly Humiliated, Assaulted for Marrying Against Family’s Wishes

Eluru, Andhra Pradesh – A young man in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh, was brutally assaulted and publicly humiliated by his wife’s relatives after marrying her against their wishes. Sai Chand, who married Sai Durga after an eight-year relationship, was targeted shortly after the ceremony by Sai Durga’s family, who reportedly disapproved of the union.

According to Eluru Superintendent of Police (SP) Shiva Pratap Kishore, the family’s disapproval stemmed from the fact that Sai Durga works for the postal department while Sai Chand is unemployed.

A disturbing video circulating online shows Sai Chand being dragged by his hair, tied to an electricity pole, and repeatedly slapped and assaulted. The couple had sought police protection to get married as Sai Durga’s family was against the alliance. While Sai Chand’s parents attended the wedding, Sai Durga’s family stayed away.

“We have registered a case of kidnapping and assault,” SP Kishore told NDTV. “No one is permitted to bypass the legal system to settle personal or familial grievances.”

Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident and are currently providing protection to the newly married couple. The incident has sparked outrage and highlights the continued prevalence of honor-based violence in some regions of India. Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
