Thu Jan 01 05:40:00 UTC 2026: Greer Grammer Reveals Kelsey Grammer’s ‘Meanest’ Remark About Her Last Name
Los Angeles, CA – Actress Greer Grammer, daughter of actor Kelsey Grammer, recently shared a surprising anecdote about her father on the “Pretty Basic Podcast.” Greer revealed that Kelsey, 70, suggested to her mother, stylist Barrie Buckner, when Greer was young that she consider not using his last name to avoid potential difficulties growing up without him.
“He was like, ‘I told your mom… I said it might be better for you to not have my last name. It would be easier for you growing up,'” Greer, 33, recounted. She admitted the comment stung deeply, as she interpreted it as an indication he didn’t expect to be a consistent presence in her life. “I think I was like 19 when he told me that and I started sobbing, because to me that was like the meanest thing you could ever say to somebody.”
Despite the initial hurt, Greer acknowledged the fairness of her father’s sentiment. Greer reconnected with Kelsey at 16 while volunteering at a Christmas tree lot as Miss Teen Malibu. She described the encounter where Kelsey approached her, confirming her identity before introducing himself.
The reunion eventually led to a renewed relationship. Greer said the two have a good relationship now, and confirmed that while Kelsey supported her financially through college, she does not have a trust fund.
Kelsey Grammer, who has eight children, previously told PEOPLE magazine about his efforts to reconnect with some of his older children. “I have neglected a couple of the kids in my life, especially the first two,” he admitted in May, adding, “I’m trying to make up for a little of it now.”
