US Stock Markets to Close for New Year’s Day; Bond Markets to Halt Trading Early
NEW YORK – Investors should prepare for a day off as U.S. stock markets will be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Both the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will conduct normal trading sessions on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, before the holiday closure.
The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) announced that U.S. bond markets will wrap up trading early on December 31st, ceasing activity at 2:00 p.m. ET before remaining closed on New Year’s Day.
Trading in both stock and bond markets will resume on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Looking ahead, the next scheduled market closure will be on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Market participants are advised to plan their trading activities accordingly.
