Deadline Highlights “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” Screenplay; Rose Byrne Starrer Garners Awards Buzz

LOS ANGELES, CA – Deadline’s “Read the Screenplay” series is spotlighting Mary Bronstein’s critically acclaimed dramatic comedy, “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” following its Sundance Film Festival premiere. The film stars Rose Byrne as a therapist whose life unravels as she grapples with a daughter’s mysterious illness, a missing patient, an absent husband, and her own therapist, played by Conan O’Brien, contemplating ending their sessions. The cast also includes Danielle Macdonald, Christian Slater, A$ap Rocky, and Delaney Quinn.

Bronstein, known for her 2018 debut “Yeast” starring Greta Gerwig, has been recognized with Gotham Awards nominations for both her script and directing. Byrne’s performance has been particularly lauded, earning her a Leading Performer award at the Berlin Film Festival, along with Best Actress nominations at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Gothams, and Spirit Awards.

Bronstein shared that the film draws inspiration from her personal experiences as a mother navigating a family illness. While not autobiographical, she describes the film as “emotionally accurate,” capturing the anxiety and feelings of inadequacy many mothers experience. Bronstein dedicated seven years to developing the script, driven by a desire to portray the often-unseen realities of maternal anxiety and shame.

The full screenplay is available to read on Deadline.
