Thu Jan 01 12:17:27 UTC 2026: Headline: Massive Pro-Palestine Rally in Istanbul Demands End to ‘Slow-Motion Genocide’
Istanbul, Turkey – Hundreds of thousands of people flooded the streets of Istanbul on Thursday, January 1, in a powerful display of solidarity with Palestinians, denouncing Israel’s actions in Gaza and demanding greater international pressure. Demonstrators dismissed the current ceasefire as a mere pause in what they described as a “slow-motion genocide.”
The massive rally, organized by the National Will Platform and supported by over 400 civil society organizations, saw protesters waving Palestinian and Turkish flags as they marched across the historic Galata Bridge despite freezing temperatures. The event, dubbed “We won’t remain silent, we won’t forget Palestine,” was amplified by support from major Turkish football clubs, drawing participation from diverse segments of the population.
“We will not get used to this silence,” declared Galatasaray football club chair Dursun Ozbek, echoing the sentiments of many who view Israel’s actions as a moral failing of the international community.
According to police sources and the Anadolu state news agency, approximately 500,000 people participated in the demonstration, which featured speeches and a performance by Lebanese singer Maher Zain.
While Turkey has taken steps to cut trade with Israel and restrict access to its airspace and ports, protesters emphasized the need for sustained and meaningful international pressure to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Al Jazeera’s Turkiye correspondent Sinem Koseoglu reported that the issue transcends political divides in Turkey, uniting supporters from across the political spectrum. Many demonstrators expressed skepticism about the ceasefire, viewing it as fragile and ineffective given the continued violence and restrictions on aid entering Gaza. Since the ceasefire was enacted, more than 400 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in the besiged strip.
