Gig Workers’ Strike Fails to Halt Delhi-NCR Deliveries Amidst High Incentives

New Delhi – January 1, 2026: Despite a nationwide strike by gig and platform workers on New Year’s Eve, Delhi-NCR experienced minimal disruption to delivery services as companies rolled out significant incentives to keep workers on the road.

The strike, organized to protest “systemic exclusion from core labor entitlements,” saw many gig workers voicing concerns about lack of job security, high platform fees, and absence of support in cases of accidents or customer misbehavior.

“My company is offering ₹150 for each delivery. Who would not take such an offer?” said Sateesh Kaushik, a food delivery worker, highlighting the dilemma faced by many. Companies like Zomato collaborated with local police to ensure worker safety.

While some residents supported the strike by refraining from online orders, others reported receiving their deliveries on time. Social media reflected mixed opinions, with some users questioning the strike’s effectiveness due to the visible presence of delivery workers. Some workers also reported that companies used third-party contractors to handle deliveries.

Raghav Chadha, an Aam Aadmi Party leader, voiced support for the workers and urged e-commerce companies to engage in dialogue and find fair solutions. Dyal Singh, a restaurant owner, expressed solidarity with the workers, despite the strike impacting his business.

However, unions like the Gig and Platform Service Workers Union accused companies of undermining the strike through tactics like heavy incentives and threats of job loss.

“The strike is hurting my business, but I fully support them. They are raising their legitimate issues. Why shouldn’t we support them?” Dyal Singh said.

Many workers pointed out the lack of financial security and support in case of accidents. One beautician said that about 50% of her earnings go as platform fees. Another worker said that his company didn’t provide any support after an accident.
