Wed Dec 31 19:41:42 UTC 2025: Headline: Finnish Authorities Seize Vessel Suspected of Severing Undersea Cable Amid Sabotage Fears

Helsinki, Finland – Finnish authorities have seized a cargo vessel, the Fitburg, suspected of intentionally damaging an undersea telecommunications cable within Finland’s exclusive economic zone in the Gulf of Finland. The incident has fueled concerns of potential Russian sabotage targeting critical infrastructure.

The Fitburg, en route from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Israel, was intercepted by the Finnish Border Guard on Wednesday after allegedly dragging its anchor and being directed into Finnish territorial waters. Finnish police have launched an investigation into potential aggravated criminal damage and interference with telecommunications. The vessel’s 14 crew members, hailing from Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan, have been detained.

The damaged cable belongs to telecommunications provider Elisa. While the company stated that the damage has not impacted its services due to rerouting, the incident has raised significant security concerns. A second telecoms cable connecting Estonia to Finland also experienced an outage on Wednesday, although it remains unclear if the two incidents are related.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has assured the public that Finland is prepared for various security challenges and will respond accordingly. NATO has increased its presence in the Baltic Sea and is in communication with Finnish authorities through its shipping center.

The Gulf of Finland, bordered by Estonia, Finland, and Russia, has seen a number of similar incidents in recent years. With heightened tensions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many security analysts and political leaders fear that cable sabotage is part of a broader “hybrid war” waged by Russia against NATO and its allies. This incident follows a similar event on Christmas Day 2024, where an oil tanker damaged five cables in the same region.
