Indian Couple Celebrates Unique “Constitutional Wedding” in Palakkad
Palakkad, India – January 1, 2026 – A couple in Palakkad, Kerala, have garnered attention for their unconventional wedding ceremony held on New Year’s Day. Sheetal and Jithin, exchanged copies of the Indian Constitution instead of traditional vows at the Sub-Registrar’s Office in Nenmara. The couple aimed to celebrate simplicity and reflect the ideals of the Constitution in their union.
Sheetal, a teacher at Kannadi Higher Secondary School, and Jithin, a village assistant, signed a marriage pledge inspired by the Preamble of the Constitution and distributed pamphlets highlighting constitutional principles. Sheetal’s prior experience as a Constitution trainer in Kollam, India’s first fully Constitution-literate district, further motivated their decision.
“We wanted to ensure that constitutional values start at home and within the family,” the couple stated.
The ceremony, witnessed by a small group of friends, was free of customary formalities, emphasizing simplicity and constitutional values. Naseem Khan, chairperson of the Constitution Literacy Council, praised the couple for sending a message that family relationships should be grounded in moral and constitutional values. The ceremony concluded with the national anthem.
