Odisha: BJD Slams BJP Government Over Rising Crime, Economic Slump
Bhubaneswar, January 1, 2026 – The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has launched a scathing attack on the Mohan Majhi government in Odisha, alleging a complete collapse of law and order and a drastic decline in the state’s economy during the last 18 months of BJP rule.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, BJD Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra cited alarming figures of 40,947 cases of crimes against women registered in the state during that period, emphasizing the worsening law and order situation. He highlighted several disturbing instances of rape, claiming they had brought shame upon Odisha at the national level.
The BJD also voiced concerns about Odisha’s economic performance. The party claims that state revenue from major minerals has declined from ₹50,000 crore to ₹34,000 crore, and revenue from minor minerals has fallen from ₹1,485 crore to ₹600 crore. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty also criticized the government’s handling of recruitment examinations, claiming 20 had been canceled in the last 18 months and investigations handed over to the CBI.
The BJD criticized the fact that the Home Department is directly under the Chief Minister. The BJD alleges that the “double-engine” government has failed to maintain law and order in the State.
