Wed Dec 31 20:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Lightning Coach Jon Cooper to Mark 1,000th Game, Cementing Legacy
Tampa Bay, FL – Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper is set to mark a major milestone Wednesday night as he coaches his 1,000th NHL game with the team when they visit the Anaheim Ducks. Cooper’s journey from a Texarkana junior hockey coach to a two-time Stanley Cup champion is a testament to his hard work, hockey knowledge, and exceptional ability to connect with people.
Cooper’s 594 wins over his first 1,000 games are the most by any coach in their first 1,000 games with a single NHL team.
Those who have worked closely with Cooper describe him as a detail-oriented leader who prioritizes building strong relationships and fostering a winning culture. His wife, Jessie, recalls the early days when Cooper left his law career to coach full-time, a decision that involved significant financial risk and hard work, including helping to reinstall the ice in their Texarkana arena multiple times a season.
“You have to have fortitude and a lot of vision, and he just kept going,” Jessie Cooper said.
Assistant coach Brian Garlock emphasizes Cooper’s loyalty and his ability to create a team environment where everyone feels valued. Fellow assistant Rob Zettler praised Cooper’s ability to simplify complex hockey concepts for his players and his knack for connecting with people at all levels of the organization.
“It’s the relationship with players, the relationship with staff, and the relationship with people above you,” Zettler said.
Cooper’s impact extends beyond the ice, as evidenced by a moment Zettler witnessed during training camp when Cooper sat with and engaged in conversation with a player who was not expected to play for the Lightning, highlighting his commitment to giving the “gift of time” to others.
With Tampa Bay now a true home for his family, Cooper is one of only five coaches in NHL history to reach 1,000 games with one franchise.
