Bills Kicker Carousel Continues: Bass Out for Season, Prater’s Return Uncertain
Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Bills are experiencing a major headache in their kicking game, as injuries have decimated their depth chart. The Sporting News reports that starting kicker Tyler Bass is officially out for the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery to address a persistent groin/hip injury.
Bass was placed on injured reserve at the beginning of the season. His replacement, veteran Matt Prater, has also been sidelined since Week 15 with a right quadriceps injury.
“He was dealing with (the injuries), it wasn’t going away, we thought it was going away, then it wasn’t going away as he was trying to get himself back ready. So the decision to get surgery was almost made up for him,” said head coach Sean McDermott regarding Bass.
Prater has not practiced and his return timeline is currently unknown. However, the Bills haven’t placed him on injured reserve, fueling speculation that the team is hopeful he can return in time for the playoffs.
Veteran Michael Badgley will continue to handle kicking duties in the interim. Badgley has started in Week 16 and will start in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
