BLO Death in West Bengal Sparks Political Firestorm Over Electoral Roll Revision
Kolkata, December 28, 2025 – The death of a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal’s Bankura district has ignited a political controversy, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging the death was a direct result of excessive pressure from the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Haradhan Mandal, a schoolteacher serving as a BLO in Ranibandh block, was found dead on school property this morning. Police recovered a note, reportedly bearing Mandal’s signature, indicating his inability to cope with the work-related pressure. An investigation is underway.
TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP of “bulldozing” the SIR process, claiming the accelerated and politically motivated effort has led to “panic, anxiety, exhaustion, and fear,” resulting in over 50 deaths. He further alleged the SIR process is a voter-cleansing operation designed for BJP’s electoral gain.
In a post on X, Banerjee claimed Mandal “took his own life under the inhuman pressure” of the SIR. He criticized the Election Commission for being complicit and bending to the will of the BJP. Banerjee stated that the TMC will hold the BJP accountable for these alleged collateral costs.
The BJP has not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations. The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls began in West Bengal on November 4, 2025.
