Boston, MA – A significant snowstorm is poised to impact Southern New England overnight, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions, particularly for those returning from post-holiday celebrations.
According to NBC10 Boston’s First Alert forecast, snowfall rates could reach 1-3 inches per hour across a swath of the region, including New York City, western Connecticut, and the Hartford area, between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday night. Accumulation of 3-6 inches is possible by midnight in these areas.
Boston is expected to see snow accumulation begin after 10 p.m., with “sneaky” ocean-effect snow bands potentially bringing pre-storm snowfall to coastal and southeastern Massachusetts. A steady shield of snow will move into Boston around 9 p.m. and continue throughout the night.
The snow is expected to be “quite fluffy” due to temperatures in the teens and 20s, leading to potentially high snow ratios of 15:1.
Travel is strongly discouraged Friday night in southwestern New England due to dangerous conditions.
Forecasts predict up to 5 inches of snow in Boston and much of eastern Massachusetts, with isolated areas along the south shore potentially receiving 5-8 inches depending on the location of the ocean-effect snow bands. Heavier snowfall of 5-8 inches is likely from Worcester County to northern Berkshire County and into southern Vermont, while western Connecticut could see 8-12 inches.
A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of Connecticut from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon due to the expected heavy snow.
The snow will taper off inland around daybreak on Saturday, but ocean-effect snow bands will linger through midday in Plymouth County and on Cape Cod. Temperatures will remain in the 20s during the afternoon with sunny conditions further inland.
Sunday will bring a dry start with milder highs near 40 degrees. However, another weather system is expected to move in Sunday night into Monday. Temperatures will drop, and freezing rain is possible for a short time Sunday night (10 p.m. – 4 a.m.) before transitioning to all rain as the system lifts northeastward on Monday afternoon, with highs reaching the mid 40s.
The remainder of the year is expected to be breezy and dry. New Year’s Day will also be breezy with highs in the upper 20s, but dry.
Stay tuned to NBC10 Boston for the latest updates and information on this evolving weather situation.
