Winter Storm Set to Hit Philadelphia Region After Christmas, Potentially Disrupting Travel
PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Philadelphia region is bracing for a winter storm expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain the weekend after Christmas. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches for Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey north of Camden County, warning of potentially hazardous travel conditions.
FOX 29 meteorologist Sue Serio predicts the storm will begin Friday afternoon, December 26, 2025, moving from west to east. The Philadelphia area can expect a mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow, while South Jersey and Delaware will transition to rain overnight. Precipitation is expected to begin around 5 or 6 p.m. Friday, with the storm moving offshore by Saturday morning.
Snowfall totals are uncertain, with models varying, but forecasters generally predict 1 to 2 inches in northern Delaware, 1.5 to 4 inches in the Philadelphia area, and higher amounts further north. The National Weather Service estimates a nearly 30% chance of Philadelphia receiving 4 inches of snow or sleet by Saturday morning, a figure that rises to 63% just 30 miles north in Trenton.
Beyond snow, experts are also predicting significant ice accumulation overnight Friday into Saturday, making streets and sidewalks dangerously slippery.
The National Weather Service urges people to consider delaying all travel until after the storm passes. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution and carry emergency safety kits in case of being stranded.
