Fri Dec 19 10:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Twin Cities Hit by Flash Freeze and High Winds; Blizzard Warning Up North

MINNEAPOLIS (CBS Minnesota) – December 18, 2025 – The Twin Cities and surrounding areas are battling a flash freeze and high winds today, prompting a NEXT Weather Alert and making travel hazardous. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight due to blowing snow and icy conditions.

Wind gusts of 45-60 mph are expected throughout the afternoon and evening, with a wind advisory in place until 9 p.m. Blizzard conditions persist in far northern and northwestern Minnesota, severely impacting travel in those regions. Several schools in western Minnesota have already closed due to the adverse weather.

While snowfall accumulation is expected to be light, around 1.5 inches in the metro area, sudden snow squalls pose a significant threat, reducing visibility to near zero and increasing the risk of accidents.

The snow is expected to dissipate overnight, but dangerously cold temperatures will follow. The metro area will see temperatures near zero, while northern Minnesota will plummet to the minus 10s. Wind chills Friday morning will range from minus 10 to minus 20 degrees.

Slight relief is expected on Friday, with highs rising into the teens, accompanied by clouds and lessening winds. A chance of snow exists in northern Minnesota, with a possibility of the metro area being affected late Friday night.

The weekend forecast for the metro area is mostly sunny with highs in the mid-to-upper 20s on Saturday. Sunday morning will bring lows near zero again, with temperatures eventually climbing into the teens.

Looking ahead, the forecast calls for drier weather and milder temperatures in the 30s, which is near average, lasting through Christmas and likely through the New Year.
