Indian Stock Market Dips Amid Global Uncertainty

Mumbai, December 18, 2025 – Indian benchmark equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, opened lower on Thursday, December 18th, mirroring a downward trend in global markets. The BSE Sensex declined by 214.87 points to 84,344.78 in early trading, while the NSE Nifty dipped 56.1 points to 25,762.45.

Sun Pharma, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, Bharat Electronics and Maruti were among the significant losers within the Sensex. Conversely, HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra and ITC showed gains.

The Asian market performance was mixed, with South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng experiencing declines, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite index traded positively. This follows a sell-off in U.S. markets on Wednesday, where the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average all extended their losing streaks. Investors are reportedly taking profits in high-valuation technology and AI stocks.

“Global markets are entering today’s session cautiously, reflecting a sharp sell-off overnight in the U.S.,” said Ponmudi .R, CEO of Enrich Money. He further noted that investor sentiment is cautious awaiting U.S. consumer price inflation data, with divided views influencing defensive positioning and avoidance of aggressive strategies.

Despite remaining sellers for fourteen consecutive sessions, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers on December 17th, purchasing equities worth ₹1,171 crore. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) supported this trend with net buying of ₹768 crore.

“Market participants are likely to track global equity trends, crude oil price movements, and institutional fund flows for further direction during the session,” said Amruta Shinde, Technical & Derivative Analyst at Choice Equity Broking Private Limited.

Brent crude oil prices saw a modest increase of 0.65% to $60.07 per barrel.
