Thu Dec 18 08:20:00 UTC 2025: Larian Studios Clarifies AI Use in Upcoming ‘Divinity’ Game, Dismisses Replacement Claims

Following fan backlash over reports of AI implementation, Larian Studios’ co-founder Swen Vincke has clarified the studio’s approach to generative AI in the development of their next “Divinity” game.

Vincke addressed concerns that the studio was “pushing hard” on AI, stating that Larian is not replacing artists or writers with AI. Instead, they are using AI tools for tasks like PowerPoint presentations, concept art ideation, and placeholder text, with the final in-game content created by human developers.

Larian emphasizes that these AI tools are intended to assist creatives and streamline workflows, not replace human talent. The studio says it is actively hiring more concept artists, writers, and storytellers and currently has 23 concept artists on staff.

Vincke further explained that AI is used to explore references, like using Google or art books, and as rough outlines for compositions before original concept art is created. Larian also uses AI for mundane tasks like animation retargeting and white boxing.

“We are neither releasing a game with any AI components, nor are we looking at trimming down teams to replace them with AI,” Vincke stated.
