Xcel Energy May Initiate Power Shutoffs on Front Range Due to High Fire Danger

DENVER – With the Front Range bracing for high fire danger, Xcel Energy is considering proactively shutting off power to some customers on Wednesday. The energy provider cites prolonged dry conditions, near-record high temperatures, and a forecast of strong winds as the reasons for the potential outages.

“Our priority is protecting customers and communities,” Xcel Energy stated in a news release, outlining measures taken to mitigate wildfire risk. The company will provide updates regarding potential shutoffs on its website.

The heightened fire risk has prompted some counties to implement fire restrictions. Douglas County is currently under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, while Arapahoe County has enacted a Stage 2 Burn Ban.

This news comes in the wake of a $640 million settlement reached in September by Xcel Energy and other telecom companies related to claims stemming from the devastating Marshall Fire of December 2021. The settlement resolved claims related to the first fire, days before a trial was set to begin regarding whether Xcel Energy’s power lines ignited a second blaze shortly after the Marshall Fire erupted – a claim the company disputes.

The Marshall Fire, the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, destroyed over 900 homes, caused billions in damages, and resulted in the tragic loss of life for two residents and hundreds of pets in Louisville and Superior. A 2023 investigation concluded that the fire originated from a dormant blaze on a religious group’s property and was fueled by a second fire believed to be caused by Xcel Energy equipment.
