Sydney Fruit Seller Hailed as Hero After Tackling Gunman in Bondi Beach Massacre
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – December 15, 2025 – A mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney during a Hanukkah celebration has left 16 dead and 29 injured, with police declaring the attack a terrorist incident and targeting Jewish Community. Amidst the chaos, one man is being lauded as a hero for his quick thinking and bravery.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit seller, has been identified as the individual seen in viral social media footage tackling one of the alleged gunmen. The 15-second clip shows al Ahmed, unarmed, running towards the gunman, grabbing him by the neck, disarming him, and forcing him to the ground. Witnesses say his actions likely saved numerous lives.
Al Ahmed sustained two gunshot wounds during the attack and is currently hospitalized undergoing surgery. His cousin, Mustapha, told 7News that the family hopes he will be fine, adding, “He’s a hero 100 per cent.” Despite reportedly having no prior experience with firearms, al Ahmed intervened after witnessing the unfolding tragedy.
Online, al Ahmed is receiving widespread praise for his courage. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also recognized him as a hero.
Police have identified the two alleged gunmen as Sajid Akram, 50, who was killed at the scene, and his son, Naveed Akram, 24, who is in critical condition in hospital. The attack occurred as hundreds gathered to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah. Among the victims is an Israeli citizen, according to Israel’s foreign ministry.
Prime Minister Albanese convened the national security committee urgently in response to the attack. “There has been a devastating terrorist incident at Bondi at the Hanukkah by the sea celebration. This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah… An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” Albanese stated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Australian government of fueling antisemitism before the attack. He says that antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders are silent and do not act.
