Parliament Reconvenes, Set to Introduce Bills on Appropriation, Rural Employment, and Repeal of Outdated Laws
New Delhi – December 15, 2025 – The Lok Sabha reconvened today at 11 a.m. following a brief adjournment, with a busy legislative agenda planned for the day.
Proceedings began with obituary references honoring the late former Members of Parliament Subhash Ahuja, Prof. Salahuddin, and Bal Krishna Chauhan.
A key item on the agenda is the introduction of a bill authorizing further payments and appropriations from the Consolidated Fund of India for the financial year 2025-26.
The government has also circulated a bill proposing a significant overhaul of the rural employment landscape. This bill seeks to repeal the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and replace it with a new law called the “Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin).” Sources also suggest that the government plans to rename MGNREGA to Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana, increasing guaranteed employment from 100 to 125 days.
Furthermore, the Union Cabinet has approved a bill to repeal 71 outdated laws, including 65 amendments to principal Acts and six principal laws. At least one of these laws dates back to the British era.
The proposed changes to the rural employment scheme, in particular, are expected to generate significant debate within the House.
