Mon Dec 15 16:42:54 UTC 2025: ## Kozhikode Local Elections: Shifting Tides See UDF Gain Ground as LDF Grapples with Losses
Kozhikode, India – December 15, 2025 – The political landscape in Kozhikode is undergoing a significant shift following the recent local body elections. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is facing internal scrutiny after experiencing substantial losses, particularly in traditionally strong areas. Conversely, the United Democratic Front (UDF) is celebrating unexpectedly strong gains, marking a potential turning point in the region’s political dynamics.
The UDF achieved a historic victory by securing control of the 28-member district panchayat for the first time. They secured 14 seats and the crucial support of the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) candidate. This victory came at the expense of the LDF, who lost five seats and saw defeats in key strongholds within the Vadakara-Perambra belt.
The UDF-RMP coalition also maintained control over several grama panchayats and increased RMP representation in the Vadakara municipality. Meanwhile, the LDF lost control of numerous grama panchayats where they have been in power for consecutive terms.
Adding to the LDF’s woes, projected mayoral candidate for the Kozhikode Corporation, C.P. Musafar Ahmed, also lost in the Meenchanda ward. In total, the number of LDF councillors and Independents in the corporation has decreased from 51 to 35.
Within the UDF, the Congress party is facing challenges as well. An inquiry has been launched into the defeat of their mayoral nominee, P.M. Niyas, with allegations of internal factionalism playing a role. The panel will also investigate the party’s poor performance in several municipalities and grama panchayats.
While the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], a key member of the LDF, has yet to issue a formal statement, former district secretary P. Mohanan has indicated that the party will conduct a serious introspection to understand the election results and implement necessary changes.
