JetBlue Flight Avoids Near Mid-Air Collision with US Air Force Tanker Near Venezuela

NEW YORK – A JetBlue flight narrowly avoided a potential disaster on Friday when it encountered a US Air Force refueling tanker while flying from Curacao to New York’s JFK airport. JetBlue Flight 1112 was forced to halt its ascent to avoid a collision with the tanker, which the pilot claims crossed directly into their flight path.

According to a recording of the pilot’s communication with air traffic control, the military plane did not have its transponder turned on. “We almost had a midair collision up here,” the pilot reported. “They passed directly in our flight path… They don’t have their transponder turned on. It’s outrageous.” The pilot added the tanker proceeded to fly into Venezuelan airspace.

The incident comes amid increased US military activity in the Caribbean, including drug interdiction efforts and efforts to pressure the Venezuelan government.

JetBlue spokesman Derek Dombrowski confirmed the incident. “We have reported this incident to federal authorities and will participate in any investigation,” he stated.

The Pentagon referred inquiries to the Air Force, which has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Last month, the FAA issued a warning advising US aircraft to exercise caution in Venezuelan airspace due to “the worsening security situation and heightened military activity.” The near-miss raises concerns about coordination and safety in the region.
