Mon Dec 15 10:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Brisbane Heat Face Injury Crisis Ahead of BBL|15 Opener
Geelong, VIC – The Brisbane Heat are facing a challenging start to their BBL|15 campaign, grappling with a significant injury and unavailability crisis ahead of their opening match against the Melbourne Renegades on Monday night.
Key players Spencer Johnson and Callum Vidler have been ruled out for the entire season with back injuries, while Matt Kuhnemann (side strain) and Tom Alsop (knee soreness) will miss the start of the tournament. To compound matters, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Michael Neser are unavailable due to Test duties.
Nathan McSweeney will step in as captain in Khawaja’s absence, while Paddy Dooley and Liam Haskett have been brought in as replacement players.
“That’s four of our main bowlers out of the first game, so we could have an interesting attack,” admitted Heat coach Johan Botha, acknowledging the depth of the squad will be tested.
However, the Heat have a trump card up their sleeve in the form of Pakistan superstar Shaheen Shah Afridi, the No.1 draft pick who is set to make his Big Bash debut. Afridi’s inclusion will provide a much-needed boost to the depleted bowling attack.
The Heat are aiming to bounce back from a disappointing BBL|14 season where they finished seventh after a promising start. Coach Botha emphasized the need for improved batting performances and a more balanced attack this season. The departure of Mitch Swepson to the Melbourne Stars is seen as an opportunity to achieve this balance.
“People might write us off a bit with all these injuries,” Botha said, “but you just need two players to have an outstanding tournament, and guys jump on the back of them and you get a bit of momentum going.”
