Independent Holds Key to Shoranur Municipality Leadership
Palakkad, December 15, 2025 – The political landscape of Shoranur municipality hangs in the balance as P. Nirmala, an Independent candidate backed by the United Democratic Front (UDF), emerges as the pivotal figure in determining the next leadership.
While the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured the most seats (17) in the recent municipal elections, they remain one seat short of a majority. Nirmala’s victory in the Manjakkad ward, winning by a slim margin of 20 votes against LDF’s T.P. Rajani, has positioned her as the kingmaker.
The LDF has already begun efforts to court Ms. Nirmala’s support, keenly aware that an alliance between the UDF and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which secured 12 seats, could push them into the opposition. The UDF holds 5 seats.
Reports suggest that the UDF and NDA are exploring the possibility of supporting Ms. Nirmala’s bid for the chairperson’s post, a move aimed at preventing the LDF from assuming power. Ms. Nirmala has confirmed her intention to contest for the position.
The CPI(M), a key component of the LDF, is actively attempting to dissuade Ms. Nirmala from aligning with the UDF and NDA. M.R. Murali, a CPI(M) district committee member, stated that Ms. Nirmala would be welcome to collaborate with the party, highlighting her previous tenure as CPI(M)’s standing council chairperson in Shoranur municipality from 2015 to 2020. He stated the Party was not even considering any alternatives to working with Ms. Nirmala.
The coming days are expected to be filled with intense negotiations as all parties vie for Ms. Nirmala’s support, shaping the future of Shoranur municipality for the next five years.
