Mumbai Radar Relocation to Unlock Affordable Housing in Dahisar
Mumbai, December 15, 2025 – In a move hailed as a victory for affordable housing, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will relocate its high-frequency radar from Dahisar, Mumbai, to Gorai. The decision, announced Sunday by Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, will free up hundreds of acres of land for much-needed affordable housing projects in the area.
The decision followed a collaborative effort between the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Maharashtra state government, and other stakeholders. Minister Naidu stated that the Ministry will seek immediate cabinet approval to expedite the relocation and commence construction.
Currently, radar installations in Dahisar and Juhu impose restrictions on building heights, hindering urban development and forcing many residents to reside in dilapidated structures. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the state government’s commitment to the project, pledging to bear the relocation costs and provide alternative land.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, representing North Mumbai, played a crucial role in advocating for the relocation. He projects that an estimated 50,000 houses will be constructed or redeveloped over the next five years, generating significant employment and improving living conditions.
The relocated radar is expected to transform Dahisar into a hub for affordable living. CM Fadnavis also announced that 40% of the AAI land at Dahisar will be allocated for public purposes, and plans are underway to explore alternative sites for the radar in Juhu as well. Once the technical study is completed and the site is finalised, the approval process for shifting the Juhu radar will begin. The combined effect of the moves could bring relief to thousands of families and facilitate economic development in the region.
