Grizzlies Face South Dakota in FCS Quarterfinals Showdown

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana Grizzlies (3 seed) are gearing up for a high-stakes FCS Quarterfinal matchup against the 11th-seeded South Dakota Coyotes this Saturday at 1:30 PM MST inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium. This marks the first meeting between the two programs since Montana’s 24-7 victory in 2022.

“There are no teams left in this thing that aren’t really good football teams,” said Griz Head Coach Bobby Hauck, emphasizing the challenge ahead. “South Dakota is a very good team. Their DNA is toughness.”

The Coyotes boast a potent offense led by veteran quarterback Aidan Bouman, who has amassed over 2,600 passing yards and 24 touchdowns this season. Hauck acknowledged Bouman’s experience, stating, “The game slows down for him. They see things, they tend not to make mistakes.”

However, the Grizzlies’ defensive focus will primarily be on sophomore running back LJ Phillips Jr., the nation’s leading rusher with over 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns. Hauck praised Phillips as “a really good zone runner with good vision and good speed.” South Dakota’s aerial attack is fueled by receiver Larenzo Fenner, who has recorded 984 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.

Montana is riding high after a dominant 50-29 victory over South Dakota State last week. The Grizzlies will aim to establish their offensive rhythm early and maintain a fresh defense. Senior running back Stevie Rocker Jr. highlighted the importance of a balanced offense, noting that a strong running game “helps keep the defense off the field.”

Senior defensive end Kellen Detrick emphasized the team’s unity and commitment to a common goal. “We just want to play for each other,” Detrick said. “And we want to play for one goal and that’s to win.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the FCS Semifinals, potentially setting up a second Brawl of the Wild matchup against Montana State in Bozeman.
