Indian Marine Police Intercept Beedi Leaf Smuggling Operation
THOOTHUKUDI, INDIA – December 13, 2025 – In the early hours of Saturday, December 13, 2025, the Indian Marine Police successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle ₹71 lakh worth of beedi leaves to Sri Lanka.
Acting on intelligence, Inspector Petchimuthu and his team were patrolling the Terespuram beach when they discovered a mini-lorry at approximately 4:30 a.m. Four individuals were in the process of unloading bundles of beedi leaves from the vehicle. Upon being approached by the police, the individuals abandoned the cargo and fled the scene.
Authorities seized a total of 2,835 kg of beedi leaves, packed in 81 bundles. An investigation is currently underway to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
