Australia’s Social Media Ban Excludes Gaming Platforms, Sparks Debate

Perth, Australia – A new social media ban aimed at protecting Australian children under 16 has come into effect, blocking access to platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and X. However, the exclusion of gaming platforms like Roblox and Discord has drawn criticism from experts who argue that these spaces pose similar risks, including excessive screen time, exposure to harmful content, and potential for exploitation.

Dr. Daniela Vecchio, a psychiatrist running Australia’s only publicly-funded gaming disorder clinic, points out the interconnectedness of gaming and social media. Many gamers spend significant time on platforms like Steam and YouTube, and experts have raised concerns about Discord and Roblox, citing reports of children encountering explicit or harmful content.

While Roblox has introduced age assurance features, and Discord has implemented teen-by-default settings for Australian users, the debate continues. Former gaming clinic patient Kevin Koo, 35, believes a social media ban might have limited his internet access as a youth. He likens his past excessive gaming to substance abuse.

The Australian government defends the ban as a measure to protect children from harmful content, cyberbullying, and online grooming. However, critics like Professor Marcus Carter argue the legislation is a reactive “band-aid,” and Professor Tama Leaver calls for a more nuanced approach that acknowledges both the positive and negative aspects of gaming platforms.

The government plans to continually review the banned platforms list, recently adding Twitch. Communications Minister Anika Wells has also stated the eSafety Commissioner is monitoring Roblox. Meanwhile, the demand for help at the gaming disorder clinic continues to rise, highlighting the growing concern over the impact of online platforms on young people.
