Two Dead, Eight Wounded in Brown University Shooting; Suspect Still at Large

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – A shooting at Brown University on Saturday left two people dead and eight others injured, prompting a campus-wide lockdown. The incident occurred in the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and physics department, while students were taking final exams.

According to Deputy Chief of Police Timothy O’Hara, the suspect is described as a male wearing dark clothing, last seen fleeing the engineering building where the attack took place. Authorities are currently engaged in a widespread search, scouring campus buildings and surrounding areas.

Mayor Brett Smiley has issued a shelter-in-place order for the area, urging residents near the campus to remain indoors and avoid returning home until further notice. “We are deploying all available resources to apprehend the suspect,” Mayor Smiley stated, adding that the injured victims are in critical but stable condition. The Mayor did not confirm whether the victims were students.

The shooting occurred during engineering design exams. A student working in a nearby dorm reported hearing sirens and receiving alerts about an active shooter. Another student, who was in a lab close to the Barus & Holley building said that students hid under desks and turned off the lights after receiving the alert.

President Donald Trump addressed the nation, offering his prayers for the victims. In a statement, he mentioned that the FBI is on the scene. Vice President JD Vance also expressed his concern on X, stating that the situation is being closely monitored and that the FBI is prepared to offer assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The lockdown remains in effect as the search for the suspect continues.
