Apple Urges iPhone Users to Upgrade to iOS 26 for Latest Features and Security

MEMPHIS, TN – Apple is subtly changing its approach and now strongly recommending that iPhone users update to the latest iOS 26 operating system. The tech giant has shifted iOS 26 from an optional upgrade to a “recommended” one, prompting many users who haven’t yet updated to finally make the switch.

While Apple continues to provide security updates for older operating systems like iOS 18, experts warn that this support may not last much longer. Staying on iOS 26 ensures users receive the most current security patches and benefit from new features. For those with devices unable to support iOS 26, Apple will continue to offer iOS 18 updates.

The latest iteration, iOS 26.2, is expected to roll out imminently, potentially as soon as December 15th or 16th, according to AppleHeadlines. Apple released the iOS 26.2 release candidate (RC) to developers on December 3rd, signaling a public release is just around the corner.

What’s New in iOS 26?

Apple encourages users to plug their device into power, connect to Wi-Fi, and navigate to Settings > General > Software Update to initiate the upgrade.

iOS 26 is compatible with iPhone 11 models and newer, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). However, some advanced features, such as Apple Intelligence, will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer.

Downloading and installing iOS 26 can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on internet speed, device model, server load, and the update’s size.

Tech experts are advising users with compatible devices to update from iOS 18 to iOS 26.1 (released in September) to prepare for the upcoming iOS 26.2 launch.

Apple has seemingly pushed the newer software update to the top of the list under Settings on their iPhones in recent days. Tech experts say customers who want to stay on top of security fixes will need to transition to iOS 26, though Apple still supports those who can only run iOS 18.

While Apple isn’t forcing the update, and users have been able to stay on prior-generation versions of iOS since iOS 15, the move towards recommending the latest version signals a strategic shift to ensure a more secure and feature-rich user experience.
