Kushagra Blazes Trail as Jharkhand Creates History in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Pune, December 13, 2025 – Kumar Kushagra is making a compelling case for his inclusion in the Gujarat Titans’ playing XI with a string of explosive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand smashed a blistering 86 off just 42 balls on Friday, propelling his team to a record-breaking run chase against Punjab.

Jharkhand successfully chased down a mammoth target of 236 in just 18.1 overs, securing a six-wicket victory. Kushagra’s innings, punctuated by four sixes and eight boundaries, was instrumental in the chase. Captain Ishan Kishan contributed a quick-fire 47 off 23 balls, while Pankaj Kumar added a valuable 39 off 18, including four sixes.

Earlier in the day, Punjab’s Salil Arora had blazed his own trail, scoring 125 off 45 balls to post a commanding total of 235 for 6. However, Kushagra’s brilliance ensured that Punjab’s efforts went in vain.

Kushagra’s current form has been exceptional throughout the tournament. He has amassed 316 runs in seven matches at an impressive strike rate of 156.43, including three half-centuries. His consistent performance has been a key factor in Jharkhand’s perfect record of eight wins in eight matches.

A former member of India’s Under-19 World Cup team, where they finished as runners-up, Kushagra has been on the radar of IPL franchises for a while. He was initially picked up by the Delhi Capitals for a staggering 7.20 crore in the 2024 auction, highlighting his potential. He was then acquired by the Gujarat Titans in 2025, who have shown faith in the young talent by retaining him ahead of the upcoming mini-auction.

With his current form and the confidence shown by the Gujarat Titans, Kumar Kushagra is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming IPL season.
