The United Democratic Front (UDF) currently holds the majority, having increased its tally to nine municipalities due to a defection. All three major political fronts—UDF, Left Democratic Front (LDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—expressed confidence in improving their performance and see these results as crucial for their preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. Ernakulam Municipal Elections Seen as Crucial Test for 2026 Kerala Assembly Polls

KOCHI, India – December 13, 2025 – The upcoming municipal elections across 13 municipalities in Ernakulam district are being closely watched as a key indicator of public sentiment ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. Political observers believe the outcome will set the tone for the larger state-level contest.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) currently holds sway over nine of the municipalities, a gain achieved after a defection from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. However, both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) are projecting increased gains in this election cycle.

“We are confident that the UDF will significantly improve its position and make substantial inroads into the LDF’s strongholds,” declared Muhammed Shiyas, President of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee.

His counterpart from the LDF, CPI(M) district secretary S. Sathish, countered, asserting that the LDF is poised for “significant gains compared to the 2020 results.”

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is aiming to increase its vote share and representation. K.S. Shyju, district president of the BJP, predicted the NDA would “upset the calculations of both the UDF and the LDF” in the key municipality of Thripunithura.

All three fronts are strategically targeting specific municipalities. The UDF hopes to capitalize on potential anti-incumbency in Eloor, while the LDF is eyeing gains in Kalamassery, North Paravur, and Perumbavoor. The NDA is focusing on increasing its support in Kothamangalam, Angamaly, and Eloor.

With all parties viewing these municipal elections as a vital testing ground, the results will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political landscape heading into the 2026 Assembly elections.
