Palmyra, Syria – A joint patrol comprised of Syrian security forces and U.S. soldiers came under fire near Palmyra in the Homs region of Syria on Saturday, resulting in the death of the assailant and injuries to two Syrian personnel and several U.S. service members, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The report stated that the gunman was killed during the incident, but offered no details regarding their motive or the circumstances surrounding the attack.

SANA also reported that traffic was temporarily suspended on the Deir Ezzor–Damascus highway as military aircraft conducted overflights in the area following the attack. A security source told SANA that U.S. helicopters evacuated the wounded to the al-Tanf base, located near the Iraqi border.

The Pentagon has yet to release a statement regarding the incident.

U.S. troops are stationed in northeastern Syria as part of an ongoing mission to support a Kurdish-led force in combating ISIL (ISIS). While ISIL was driven from Syrian territory in 2018, the group continues to carry out sporadic attacks.

The incident comes as Syria marks the first anniversary of the ouster of Bashar al-Assad and grapples with significant security and economic challenges as it seeks to recover from 14 years of civil war.
