Kochi-Muziris Biennale Opens its Sixth Edition, Showcasing Global Art and Political Resistance
KOCHI, India – December 13, 2025 – The sixth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale officially opened its doors on Friday, December 12, 2025, with a flag hoisting ceremony at Aspinwall House, Fort Kochi. Curator Nikhil Chopra welcomed visitors and encouraged them to immerse themselves in the diverse collection of works on display, urging them to “read all the signs, all the symbols, all the connections, all the dialogues.”
The opening drew a mix of art enthusiasts, tourists, students, and locals, all eager to experience the global showcase of contemporary art. Aspinwall House, a key venue, hosts significant exhibits including the Panjeri Artists’ Union, a collective exploring political resistance through various artistic mediums.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu N. Ram were present at the inauguration, held at Parade Ground in Fort Kochi.
This year’s Biennale features works from artists around the world. Dhiraj Rabha’s installations and photographs address insurgency in Assam, while Kirtika Kain’s printmaking delves into Dalit history and memory. R.B. Shajith’s expansive canvas captures the rural landscape of the Malabar region.
Chopra suggested visitors begin their journey at newer spaces like the SMS Art Gallery, traditionally a wedding hall, before returning to Aspinwall House to fully appreciate the scope of the Biennale. The venues themselves, rich in history, add to the impact of the artwork.
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale promises to transform the city into a hub of artistic expression, with streets adorned with murals and a vibrant atmosphere felt throughout Fort Kochi. The Biennale runs through [Date not specified in article].
