Delhi-NCR Experiences Unseasonably Warm Weather as Winter Chill Remains Absent
New Delhi: Delhi-NCR residents are enjoying a milder start to December than usual, with temperatures remaining above average and the expected winter chill yet to arrive. Data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday reveals the maximum temperature at Lodhi Road reached 25.4 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature also hovered slightly above average at 8.6 degrees Celsius.
This trend of warmer weather is expected to continue throughout the coming week. According to Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at the IMD, the absence of active Western Disturbances is the key factor. These weather systems bring cold, northwesterly winds to the region, triggering the onset of colder temperatures.
“There has been no active Western Disturbance this season so far, which is why a cold wave has not yet been recorded in Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas,” Dr. Kumar explained.
While a weak Western Disturbance is anticipated on December 13th, it is only expected to bring rainfall to Jammu and Kashmir, offering little relief from the warmer conditions in Delhi-NCR. In fact, Dr. Kumar forecasts that minimum temperatures in Delhi may rise by another 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next week, potentially reaching 9-10 degrees Celsius.
Despite the mild weather in Delhi-NCR, other parts of India are experiencing significantly colder conditions. The IMD reported that several locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad recorded minimum temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours. Furthermore, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions have been observed in West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, with cold wave conditions also reported in parts of Punjab, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka, and Telangana.
While these regions brace for the full force of winter, Delhi-NCR residents will have to wait longer for the true winter chill to arrive.
