Born on October 12, 1935, in Chakur, Latur district, Patil’s political journey began in 1967. He was a seven-time Member of Parliament for the Latur constituency, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics. He held various ministerial positions in the governments of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, overseeing portfolios such as Defence, Commerce, Science and Technology, and Atomic Energy.

From 1991 to 1996, Patil served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, where he spearheaded modernization efforts including computerization, live broadcasts of proceedings, and the construction of a new library building.
