Telangana Gram Panchayat Elections: First Phase Underway Amidst Tight Security
Hyderabad, December 11, 2025 – Polling is underway across Telangana today for the first phase of the Gram Panchayat elections. Over 5.6 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this phase, electing representatives for 3,834 Sarpanch posts and 27,628 Ward Member positions. Voting began at 7:00 AM and will conclude at 1:00 PM, with counting of votes commencing immediately afterward.
A total of 12,960 candidates are vying for Sarpanch positions, while 65,455 are contesting for Ward Member roles. While these elections are officially non-partisan, political analysts are viewing them as a crucial indicator of public sentiment towards the ruling Congress party, as well as the opposition BRS and BJP.
The State Election Commission (SEC) has deployed over one lakh polling staff and implemented stringent security measures, including the deployment of over 50,000 police personnel, to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process. Webcasting is also in place at 3,461 Gram Panchayats to provide real-time monitoring of the polling.
“All arrangements have been made for peaceful, free, and fair elections,” stated Station Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini.
In the lead-up to the elections, enforcement teams seized cash, liquor, drugs, and precious metals worth Rs 8.20 crore and registered 229 FIRs for violations of the Model Code of Conduct, highlighting the commitment to preventing electoral malpractice.
This is the first of three phases of Panchayat elections, with subsequent rounds scheduled for December 14th and 17th. The Telangana Cabinet’s decision to prioritize these elections was driven by the need to secure a Rs 3,000 crore grant from the Union government, which is set to expire by March 31, 2026.
The elections for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs), Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), and municipal corporations remain pending, awaiting a final High Court ruling on reservations for Backward Classes (BCs). Currently, 17.08% of Gram Panchayat seats are reserved for BCs.
