Smriti Mandhana Named Vice-Captain for Sri Lanka Series, Focuses on Cricket After Personal Turmoil
Mumbai, India – Star Indian batter Smriti Mandhana has been appointed vice-captain of the national T20I team ahead of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, marking her return to the sport after a challenging period in her personal life. This series, commencing December 21, is India’s first bilateral contest since their appearance in the Women’s World Cup final on November 2.
Mandhana, who played a crucial role in India’s Women’s World Cup victory, recently addressed the media alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur. She emphasized her unwavering dedication to cricket, stating, “I don’t think I love anything in life more than cricket. When you put on the Indian jersey, the only thing you want to do is represent India and win the match for the country.”
Her remarks come shortly after Mandhana and music composer Palash Muchhal announced the cancellation of their planned wedding, originally scheduled for November 23. The wedding was initially postponed due to the illness of Mandhana’s father, Srinivas.
Speaking about team dynamics, Mandhana acknowledged that disagreements are a natural part of a high-performing team. “I don’t look at it as issues because everyone is wanting to win the game for the country and everyone has their own opinion on how we will win the game for the country,” she said, adding that such discussions are a sign of passion and commitment to winning.
With her focus firmly back on cricket, Mandhana is eager to lead the team alongside Kaur in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
