Kentucky State University Reels After Fatal Shooting

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky State University (KSU) is in mourning following a shooting on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, that left one student dead and another critically wounded. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 PM in Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, a residence hall on the Frankfort campus.

Frankfort Assistant Chief of Police Scott Tracy confirmed that a suspect, who is not a student at the university, is in custody. Police believe the shooting to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to campus safety.

“Frankfort police believe this to be an isolated incident and there are no active safety concerns on campus at this time,” Tracy said during a news conference.

The injured student is reportedly in stable condition. University officials have not released the names of the victims.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the shooting in a video message, stating, “Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country.” He urged prayers for the victims, their families, and the entire KSU community.

University President Koffi C. Akakpo called the shooting a “senseless tragedy.”

“We’re mourning the loss of one of our students,” he said.

In response to the tragedy, KSU has canceled all classes, final exams, and campus activities for the remainder of the week. Students are being offered counseling and support services and have the option to return home.

This marks the second shooting incident near the same residence hall in recent months. On August 17, shots fired from a vehicle struck two non-students, resulting in injuries.

Kentucky State University is a historically Black university with approximately 2,200 students. The university was founded in 1886. The investigation is ongoing.
