Five years after the commissioning of flyovers at Vyttila and Kundannur junctions in Kochi, Kerala, traffic congestion remains a significant problem. Neither the PWD (NH wing) nor the NHAI has taken steps to redevelop the bottlenecked junctions beneath the flyovers, which handle over 1 lakh vehicles daily. The PWD has proposed a ₹1-crore project to redevelop the Vyttila junction, but it awaits approval. The NHAI has yet to take over repossession of the junctions due to unrepaired approach spans. A local forum is organizing a public meeting to demand action, highlighting safety concerns and proposing traffic reforms.

Kochi Traffic Nightmare: Flyover Bottlenecks Remain Five Years On
KOCHI, December 11, 2025 – Five years after the inauguration of much-touted flyovers at Vyttila and Kundannur junctions on the NH 66 Bypass, Kochi residents continue to face severe traffic congestion as redevelopment plans stall. Despite handling over 100,000 vehicles daily, the junctions beneath the flyovers remain bottlenecked, with narrow service roads struggling to cope with the volume.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed a ₹1-crore project to alleviate congestion at the Vyttila junction, focusing on widening carriageways and optimizing space. However, the project remains unsanctioned. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has yet to assume responsibility for the junctions, citing unrepaired approach spans that create a bumpy ride for flyover users.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, the Vyttila United Forum is organizing a public meeting to demand immediate action. The forum highlights safety concerns for motorists, pedestrians, and local businesses, and will present a video animation showcasing proposed traffic reforms.
“It’s shocking that neither the PWD nor the NHAI has taken steps to redevelop the junction,” said Thampy V R, Chairman of the forum. “The situation is unsafe, and urgent intervention is needed.” The forum also expressed dismay at the persistence of streetlights burning atop the Vyttila flyover during daylight hours.
The stalled redevelopment efforts leave Kochi residents stuck in gridlock, prompting calls for swift action from both state and national authorities.
