Philly Youth Football Team Rocked by Theft Scandal Ahead of Championship Loss

DAVENPORT, FL – A cloud of scandal hangs over Philadelphia’s United Thoroughbreds youth football team after eight players were arrested for allegedly stealing over $2,000 worth of merchandise from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Davenport, Florida, on Saturday morning. The incident occurred just hours before the team was set to compete in a national championship game.

The players, aged 14 and 15, face felony charges of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd detailed the alleged crime during a press conference, displaying a list of the stolen goods, which totaled more than $2,200 and included 47 different items such as football gloves, lip guards, and hoodies.

According to Sheriff Judd, the teens took an Uber to the store and then split into groups to carry out the theft. Store management witnessed the unfolding events and alerted authorities, who apprehended the players as they attempted to leave the store.

“They let the team down,” Sheriff Judd stated. “They were not taking bubble gum, one piece to chew – they stole over $2,000 worth of products…You don’t want to go to jail? You don’t want to go to juvenile lockup? Don’t steal.”

A coach for the United Thoroughbreds, who spoke to WPVI Action News, expressed dismay at the allegations. “We are not condoning the thefts,” he said. “It ruined a good thing for the entire team of players and coaches who put their hearts into the journey of making it to the championship.” The coach also indicated that the players snuck out without anyone knowing.

None of the accused players participated in the championship game, which the United Thoroughbreds subsequently lost by 20 points. Officials confirmed that the players have no prior records and did not offer any explanation for their alleged actions.

The eight teens will be required to return to Florida to face the felony charges. The incident has cast a pall over the team’s hard-fought journey to the championship, leaving other players devastated.
